Best Drink to Cleanse Colon (Homemade)

By: Ana / 1 / Autumn, Detox, Drinks, Quick & Easy, Spring, Summer, Winter, Pin

No matter the season, most of us can benefit from an anti-inflammatory elixir. This colon cleanse with lemon water, apple, and super spices is packed with anti-inflammatory compounds to boost your digestive and overall health.

Made with 7 ingredients in 10 minutes or less, this colon detox drink is very easy to prepare. You will also need a blender and a fine-mesh sieve to extract the juice and separate the pulp.

While it’s tasty enough on its own, adding an optional teaspoon or two of natural sweeteners can make this tasty drink even more enjoyable. Here is more on why you want to try this DIY colon cleanse drink and how to prepare it at home.

Why a Colon Cleanse Drink?

Most holidays are known for heavy meals and chaotic schedules. With so much going on and so much food to enjoy, staying healthy takes a backseat. But this can be taxing on your body and especially your digestive tract that has to work in overdrive.

A cleanse drink like this one can give your colon a health boost. This particular homemade colon cleanse drink contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients that can offset inflammation caused by holidays gluttony and fatigue.

Colon Cleanse Drink Ingredients

The recipe calls for 7 ingredients total, most of which you can find at your nearest supermarket.

Water

Plain drinking water will do here, but feel free to use spring water or even alkaline water for added benefits. Alkaline water has a pH above 8.8, and studies found it neutralizes stomach acids, which can be helpful if you normally suffer gastric reflux.

Raw ginger

The subtle spiciness of fresh ginger makes for an exhilarating drink. But ginger is also a proven remedy for nausea and is potentially beneficial for overall digestive health thanks to its many antioxidants.

Raw turmeric

Or turmeric powder if that is available where you live. Turmeric is one of nature’s most powerful cure-all and one that seems to shine where colon health is concerned. A large body of research shows turmeric can even prevent colon cancer.

Green apple

Use green apples with the skins on to extract as many good-for-you nutrients and compounds as you can. Unripe green apples contain less sugar and 10 times more tannins (antioxidant compounds) than their ripe counterparts — exactly what you need this time of year.

Lemon

Lemons are a well-known source of vitamin C, a nutrient that supports the immune system. Studies also show that lemons also stimulate liver detoxification by increasing the levels of liver enzymes. Since your digestive health depends on the liver, it makes sense to add this ingredient to a colon detox drink.

Chia seeds

Chia seeds are normally added to smoothies, not juices like this one. But you don’t have to worry about getting an unusual texture since you’ll only use ⅛ of a teaspoon. Chia seeds provide omega-3 fats, which lower inflammation and cholesterol levels.

Black pepper

Black pepper increases the bio-availability of curcumin — the main antioxidant in turmeric — by as much as 2000%, and that’s the main reason to add it to this juice. Besides that, a touch of black pepper adds a nice spiciness to the blend.

Honey or maple syrup

If you find this drink too acidic or astringent, feel free to add a little bit of honey or maple syrup for a vegan version. Not only do these sweeteners improve flavor, but they contain their own set of antioxidants as well.

How to Make a Colon Cleanse Drink

Making this colon cleanse drink at home is quick and easy. First, you will need to prepare your tools, which include a plain blender and fine-mesh sieve of cloth. Next, follow these three steps:

1. Add ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy

2. Strain through a sieve or cheesecloth and discard the pulp

3. Add the chia seeds and sweetener and let rest for a couple of minutes

If you’d prefer to make a colon cleanse smoothie instead, skip step two and use your favorite plant-based drink in place of water. While the health effects may not be the same, a smoothie made this way would still pack a powerful antioxidant punch.

Great recipe! What do you think about flax instead of chia?
